About

One day I inherited a kiln. This was the beginning of [glassPhilosophy]. A basement project, exploring the possibilities that lies within the fantastic material of glass. In my “other” life, I work as a public health scientist. I live and work in Norway.

In many cases, I fire the item several times in the kiln, either to be fused with more layers of glass or to be remolded into a new shape. Glass fusing is the technique used to join glass pieces together by partly melting the glass at high temperature. Two or more pieces of glass are laid on top of or overlapped on each other and are fired at temperatures ranging from 750 to 850 degrees Celsius.

Working with glass is an experimental process to me. The result is always dependent on the type of glass and other materials I use, the firing process and sometimes sheer luck (my kiln has a personality). Currently, I am particularly fascinated by the use of metals, and the effect these create when fused with different types of glass.

Best wishes,

Astrid
